What is a managed marketplace?

A managed marketplace is one that attempts to improve its customer experience by being more manually involved in the execution of transactions. This can involve curating profiles, listings, and matches before passing them along to users.

Managed marketplaces reduce the amount of work needed on the users by offloading it to the marketplace administrators and employees. Many marketplaces start as managed marketplaces while they work to automate these manual processes over time.

An example of a managed marketplace is  TheRealReal. This luxury goods marketplace manages photos, descriptions, and authentication services to alleviate friction for the sellers.

There are many types of managed marketplaces depending on the types of users that participate in them and the unique needs that each industry presents.
